Day 37: Text Zedventure

Posted: 2010/12/16 in Indie Games

I’m purchasing an Xbox Live Indie Game every day, seeking out the quality titles that got lost in the shuffle and no longer appear in the top 50 downloads. Today is day #37, and today’s game is “Text Zedventure”.

While this game has grown out of a tradition of interactive fiction text adventure games, that began with Adventure and was later popularised by Infocom (particularly its Zork series), this interactive fiction game is more reminiscent of a Choose Your Own Adventure book than it is Zork. And that’s not a bad thing, especially given the game has added appropriately atmospheric sound effects.

The game has three separate scenarios, with alternate endings and other secrets for those who explore. The author has delivered at least one content update to this game already, and has indicated that more titles are in the works. The sound effects really do bolster the experience beyond what the text alone could do, and I like the interface where you select options with the four face buttons (rather than scrolling up or down a list with the d-pad).

Anyone who’s ever enjoyed an interactive fiction game, or has fond memories of Choose Your Own Adventure books, should definitely pick this up for 80 Microsoft Points.
