Day 54: Gum Drop Celestial Frontier

Posted: 2011/01/02 in Indie Games

I’m purchasing an Xbox Live Indie Game every day, seeking out the quality titles that got lost in the shuffle and no longer appear in the top 50 downloads. Today is day #54, and today’s game is “Gum Drop Celestial Frontier”.

This game is based on a unique mechanic: that of using a tractor beam from your ship to grab objects in space and swing them around your ship. You can do this both to attack or defend against enemies, and to collect resources that you can use. The resource development end of the game is creative: similar to crafting spells in a fantasy game, here you generate power-ups based on what resources you provide to the trawler ship that accompanies you on your missions. As you learn what combinations of resources produce what powerups you can learn to generate what you need in combat.

In that sense it’s two very different games in one, a space combat game (based around an innovative mechanic) and a resource exploration and development game that mimics crafting to good effect. How much you like the game will depend heavily on whether one, the other, or both of the two primary (yet very different) elements of the game appeal to you.

But for those who enjoy space combat but not resource development, take heart: it’s very satisfying using your tractor beam to force an enemy ship into the jaws of your resource trawler, which proceeds to grind it down to space dust. Only 80 Microsoft Points are required to get this enjoyable and innovative Indie Game.
