Day 62: radiangames Fluid

Posted: 2011/01/10 in Indie Games

I’m purchasing an Xbox Live Indie Game every day, seeking out the quality titles that got lost in the shuffle and no longer appear in the top 50 downloads. Today is day #62, and today’s game is “radiangames Fluid”.

I’m a big fan of everything that Radiangames has put out, and Fluid is no exception. This was his fourth game, and the first one that wasn’t a shooter of some sort. It can be likened to a reinvention of Pac Man, but it has a feel (and especially a sense of speed) that’s all its own.

Like with Pac Man you’re moving around an arena, avoiding enemies (red orbs that home in on you at all times). The trick here is that every time Pac Man ate a pellet it simply disappeared: here, it turns into a red orb that proceeds to chase you down the rest of the game. Touching one is (usually) instant death, so the challenge is to map out a route that successfully has you converting all the orbs to red, without ever touching one. Smart level design guarantees that what looks like the most obvious route around the level is not always the best one, ensuring lots of replay value.

You have a variety of power-ups and modifiers to help you achieve that. Black holes, warp zones, speed boosts, and power-ups will all play their part in aiding you to the end of the level. Bonuses that increase your size and make you capable of killing all the red orbs on contact are also available, but you suffer a significant speed decrease (which is a major penalty as, at its heart, this is really a racing game more than it is a Pac Man variant).

This game costs a mere 80 Microsoft Points and looks so good, plays so well, and introduces enough innovation that it would be criminal not to own.

For a second opinion, check out Kobun’s review of radiangames Fluid.

I’ve just stumbled across this blog while looking for great XBLIG games, and after running backwards from Day 849 to around Day 700 I figured it would be better to start at Day 1 … which leads me to Day 62. Radiangames Fluid is one my favorite XBLIG titles: easy to play, engaging, and unique. I’m glad to read you found it so, too. I enjoy all of radiangames’ titles, but find myself wishing more was done along Fluid’s line of work. I guess near-perfection is hard to top, eh?

Keep up the great work! It is much appreciated …

    • To the best of my knowledge, this site is now the oldest continually running Xbox Live Indie Games site (and I don’t mean updated daily even, just that it’s still running 2.5 years later). Several sites have come and gone in that time. A few people, like yourself, have blitzed through reviews at the rate of dozens a day after discovering this site, and it’s always satisfying to hear that so thank you. Thank you for taking the time to comment!
