Day 71: radiangames Fireball

Posted: 2011/01/19 in Indie Games

I’m purchasing an Xbox Live Indie Game every day, seeking out the quality titles that got lost in the shuffle and no longer appear in the top 50 downloads. Today is day #71, and today’s game is “radiangames Fireball”.

From the developer:

“**Dodge, Trigger, Destroy!** Be the Fireball as you set off huge explosion combos across 8 waves and 5 unique challenges. Compare your scores to the best in the world using the online scoreboards. Update 1.1 includes a new challenge, new music track, and other improvements. Fireball is the fifth game in the radiangames series.”

Fireball was a must-buy for me in part because of an achievement that I really enjoyed getting in Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved. One of the achievements was to survive 60 seconds without firing a single shot. It’s tricky, but not impossible, and I enjoyed earning it. This game is like that achievement, except fleshed out into an attractive and fully-featured game.

At it’s core, you race around the arena, with huge swarms of enemies chasing you. Fly near enough a bomb and, after a fashion, it will explode, taking out any of the swarm near it. The trick is to coax the swarm to fly into it’s death, without touching (or being touched) by any of them. This is an agility challenge through and through, and manages to offer white-knuckled gameplay without you ever firing a shot at anything.

As with all of the games from radiangames, Luke Schneider’s done a great job with easy to navigate menus, appropriate music, attractive art style, and addictive pick-up-and-play gameplay. The global scoreboards are a huge asset to this game, helping the replay value as you try to rise up the rankings.
