Day 74: Arkedo Series – 02 SWAP!

I’m purchasing an Xbox Live Indie Game every day, seeking out the quality titles that got lost in the shuffle and no longer appear in the top 50 downloads. Today is day #74, and today’s game is “Arkedo Series – 02 SWAP!”.

For no reason other than I like the symmetry of it (and they both happen to be excellent games, today’s game is also a #2, but whereas Decay – Part 2 was a direct sequel this one gets the “2” moniker merely by virtue of being the second game from Arkedo, it has nothing at all to do with the previous Arkedo game (Arkedo Series – 01 JUMP!).

From the developer:

“Help the King Kat get his castle back in this dual stick action puzzle!”

There are a lot of games like this out there, but one of the things that made Swap a buy for me was that it kept doing things right that previous games like this have done, while also adding a few new angles. While your goal is to clear the play space of blocks, you have the ability to tap the trigger to add more blocks to the play area (gaining more points but putting yourself in more jeopardy).

The controls are simple (and very tight), move the cursor with the left stick and swap blocks with the right, keeping gamplay fast and fluid. There’s a challenge mode that has you attempting to do specific things (like clear 7 blocks of a given colour) which adds a bit of play value as well. I liked that I could drag a block from one end of the board to another, the lack of restrictions on how far you could swap a tile was a refreshing change for me from games like Hexic.

If you are played-out on match-3+ or match-4+ colour games then there may not be anything here that warrants yet another game like this, but for 240 Microsoft Points there are things to like about Swap! if you haven’t played a match-4+ block game for a while and think you might have a hankering for one again.
