Day 88: Battle Havoc

I’m purchasing an Xbox Live Indie Game every day, seeking out the quality titles that got lost in the shuffle and no longer appear in the top 50 downloads. Today is day #88, and today’s game is “Battle Havoc”.

Battle Havoc is a bit like a real-time version of Worms or Scorched Earth, if all the combatants had jump jets they could use to quickly reposition themselves on the battlefield. This puts a great new spin on an old classic, and then dolls it up with a tonne of options and unique weapons, not to mention plenty of multiplayer and singleplayer levels both.

The impressive list of features includes online multiplayer for up to 8 people, system link for up to 8 combatants, online leaderboards, offline multiplayer for up to 4, and more than a dozen objective-based singleplayer missions.

From the developer:

“Battle Havoc is a fast paced multi-player action game with a unique twist on real-time artillery combat. Take to the air with rechargeable jets unleashing the power of over 20 different weapons and upgrades. Play Deathmatch or Elimination modes against 8 players over LIVE, System Link, or a single Xbox. Earn coveted Gold Medals as you race against the clock in 13 single-player time challenges.”

The game’s graphics invoke a comic book feel that works well, and the physics are accurate and some of the particle effects quite impressive. Compared to the 1200 point XBLA game “Death Tank”, this game is hugely better at 1/3 the price (Death Tank doesn’t even support online play).

The jump jets add an interesting tactical element to the games that works well, and can be used effectively both offensively and defensively. The jump jets recharge after use, but the more you use them the longer they take to recharge, which helps balance gameplay between those who use them a lot and those who don’t.

This is the best game of this genre I’ve seen on the Xbox in any form, and the fact that it’s in the Indie Game channel is a testament to both the quality and the value that can be found there. 400 MSP very well spent.
