Day 91: Soulcaster

Posted: 2011/02/08 in Indie Games

I’m purchasing an Xbox Live Indie Game every day, seeking out the quality titles that got lost in the shuffle and no longer appear in the top 50 downloads. Today is day #91, and today’s game is “Soulcaster”.

I know Soulcaster 2 is out, having been a prominent part of the Indie Games Winter Uprising, but I’ve had my eye on the original for a while and took the opportunity to buy it. With different levels and challenges from the first game, they’re both worth owning for any fan of the genre.

The developer has described Soulcaster as “a 16-bit style action game with RPG, dungeon crawling and tower defence mechanics.” He’s not wrong. The game brilliantly blends disparate genres into a cohesive whole. The game’s hook is that you not only fight through dungeons, but you cast the souls of three warriors to assist you in your quest, each very different from each other: a fighter, an archer, and a spirit. Each has their advantages, and positioning them for maximum effectiveness in the field of battle is the key to progressing through the battles and through the game’s story. There are obvious elements, such as making sure the fighter is well positioned to defend the archer, but learning the subtler elements of their abilities and how to position them will improve your odds of success.

For 240 Microsoft Points, this game is can’t miss for both RPG and tower defence fans, and you can bet I’ll be picking up its sequel sometime in the future.

For a second opinion, check out Kobun’s review of Soulcaster.
