I’m purchasing an Xbox Live Indie Game every day, seeking out the quality titles that got lost in the shuffle and no longer appear in the top 50 downloads. Today is day #102, and today’s game is “Superspace 2”.
I was a big fan of the original Superspace, an Asteroids meets Super Sprint meets puzzle game combo, with a retro look and feel. Superspace 2 is an upgraded sequel that’s deserving of your 80 Microsoft Points (especially if you haven’t picked up the first one yet).
This game has a lot of variety including 36 levels of physics-based puzzles, a deathmatch mode, a co-op mode, and a racing mode. You have a grapple that can be used to grab crates and to play with the physics engine, and your grapple is fully implemented in all the modes (even the racing mode) giving you the ability to mess with your opponent in great Road Rash fashion. The game controls a bit like Asteroids would have if it wasn’t in a vacuum, meaning gravity was a factor, and your ship was loaded with much heavier weaponry (including missiles).
For 80 Microsoft points you get a game that’s much like what Asteroids would have become had they added puzzle elements, a full physics engine (and puzzles that rely on it), power-ups, co-operative and competitive multiplayer, and the aforementioned racing mode. With smooth animation, a retro look and feel that’s done well (when it’s so often done cheesily), and tonnes of variety, this game is a bargain and then some.
