Day 150: Retrofit – Overload

Posted: 2011/04/08 in Indie Games

I’m purchasing an Xbox Live Indie Game (XBLIG) every day, seeking out the quality titles that got lost in the shuffle and are not well represented in the top 50 lists on the Xbox Dashboard. Today is day #150, and today’s game is “Retrofit – Overload”.

While some retro games try to recapture the feel of the original, Retrofit – Overload has a slightly different approach: it’s trying to retrofit the game that inspired it with all the components that were left out the first time. Galaga is obviously the inspiration here, but adding ridiculously powerful blaster, shield deflectors, visuals that would have been simply impossible in Galaga’s day, and more make the original concept better.

First, from the developer (Wam Games):

“Get in the zone. Balance your inner harmony. Destroy all comers. Become as one with the Overload. Blistering retro shooter action featuring 2 player co-op and online scoreboards.”

There are a lot of levels on tap here, and the neon-drenched visuals (laden with particle effects) and sound effects are almost hypnotic… so much so you might not even notice the lack of a soundtrack. As you progress to the higher levels it becomes a twitch game that requires you react before you really get a chance to think about it. To see footage of what I mean, check out this gameplay video:

Tight controls complete the package. For 80 Microsoft Points any Galaga fan cannot go wrong, and the modern presentation is welcoming to newer players unfamiliar with Retrofit – Overload’s inspiration.
