Back on day 77 I reviewed a game while fighting off the effects of a bad flu, and that game was “Arkedo Series – 03 Pixel!”. Well, after some good-natured ribbing from Kobun, I’ve decided to celebrate the 6 month mark of my consecutive daily reviews by re-reviewing it as it’s a fantastic game that deserves better.
First, from the developer (Arkedo):
“”MORE BLUE” : Arkedo/Pastagames’ answer to Avatar.”
The game visually looks like a dot matrix printout come to life. It has amazing animation, humour, and personality to the game. The game is spread over 6 large levels across starkly varying terrain (city, space, sky, tree, cave, and grassland). Each level has distinctive backgrounds artwork and unique enemies to contend with.
Your character (Pixel the cat) can run, climb, and slide through the level, fighting and/or dodging enemies as the player thinks is best. The level design is good and keeps the game both entertaining and challenging, and unlimited lives help ensure that completing the game is about perseverance moreso than it is running out of lives in the climactic confrontation. Enemies are dispatched in the classic style of jumping on their head, but if you can manage to eliminate five consecutive enemies without being hurt your “Meow” attack will be enabled allowing you to attack enemies that are invulnerable to jumping.
An unusual and interesting feature of Pixel! is the ability to zoom into a block with a magnifying glass and follow a maze with your eyes. This produces “Useless Relics” that are as pointless as they sound, but also enables other gameplay elements such as restoring your character’s health.
With charm to spare, great level design, and a visual aesthetic you probably won’t see anywhere else, this 240 Microsoft Point game is a no-brainer for platformer fans.

Reminder that tomorrow will be the long-awaited Day 188 review that commemorates Mass Deduction passing the 6 month mark.
