Day 299: Jimbo Vs Legion of Darkness

[]I’m purchasing an Xbox Live Indie Game (XBLIG) every day, seeking out the quality titles that got lost in the shuffle and are not well represented in the top 50 lists on the Xbox Dashboard. Today is day #299, and today’s game is “Jimbo Vs Legion of Darkness”.

With crazy hand-drawn graphics, an art style where the word “eclectic” doesn’t even come close to describing it, and time-proven Metal Slug/Contra-inspired gameplay, how can you not plop down 80 Microsoft Points and try out “Jimbo Vs Legion of Darkness”? I couldn’t, and today plumped down the points for it, and am still blown away by the sheer zaniness of what’s on offer… and that’s a very good thing.

First, from the developer (Vile Intentions):

“The hordes of the underworld have finally come to enslave the humanity that has thrived above them for ages. Needless to say, mankind was not prepared and is fading fast, but one may yet prove he has what it takes to send a legion of darkness packing. As Jimbo, a good ole’ boy from Mississippi, use your arsenal to shoot, dismember, and explode these evil trespassers back to their unholy source!”

“Jimbo Vs Legion of Darkness” thankfully isn’t afraid to play around with its gameplay. Level one has you running and gunning against the hordes of hades, but the second level immediately changes it up by putting you in the back of a pickup truck with demons on motorbikes chasing you, and it continues to evolve from there. And did I mention there are flying saucers? Who knows why, and it likely doesn’t even matter.

The game has “wussy” and “hardcore” options, offering not only changes to difficulty levels but different control options. I actually found the controller map kind of interesting, with twin-stick shooting and jumping on one of the triggers; not what I expected, but actually pretty darn good once you’re used to it. The whole thing is meant to invoke the worst B-movie you’ve ever seen, and be so deliberately cheesy that it becomes a triumph. In that, it succeeds.
