Day 338: PewPewPewPewPewPewPewPewPew

Posted: 2011/10/15 in Indie Games

I’m purchasing an Xbox Live Indie Game (XBLIG) every day, seeking out the quality titles that got lost in the shuffle and are not well represented in the top 50 lists on the Xbox Dashboard. Today is day #338, and today’s game is “PewPewPewPewPewPewPewPewPew”.

In the early days of console gaming, games that required two players (ie. had no singleplayer option at all) were common. Pong was not so much fun with only one player. The Intellivision had quite a suite of war and strategy games that required two players, such as personal favourites “Sea Battle” and “Utopia”. Those days are mostly long gone, but “PewPewPewPewPewPewPewPewPew” is a surprising and pleasant throwback with one key change: it’s mandatory two-player co-op rather than the more traditional two-player competitive. This game has niche written all over it, because not only is it a two-player only experience but it requires two microphones (or Xbox Live headsets) to play, but is still very much worth a look. And did I mention that you control your jetpack-equipped character strictly with your voices?

First, from the developer (Josh Schonstal):

“Two people use two microphones to control one jet-pack equipped, shape shooting space-man. Requires two microphones or headsets.”

One player makes a thrusting sound to make the jetpack thrust upward. The other player makes a “pew pew pew” sound to have your character shoot at the obstacles in your path. This takes the gameplay of “Techno Kitten Adventure” and “Asteroids Do Concern Me” and takes it to an interesting new level. Having two people co-operate to perform a joint task is an interesting challenge, and makes PewPewPewPewPewPewPewPewPew a perfect party game. It costs 240 points, and worth every penny if you have the microphones and someone willing to play it with you.
