Day 391: Obesity Epidemic

Posted: 2011/12/06 in Indie Games

How do you take the near-perfection of “I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1”? You do what the developers of “Obesity Epidemic” did for their game: add 4 player co-op (with any mixture of human and AI players), give it more structure (the game urges you forward periodically, no more walking around aimlessly), and add a “fog of war” that forces you to try to find enemies with your flashlight (Alan Wake would be proud). The game’s premise is definitely memorable, your team of four are the last four pieces of junk food in the grocery store, and junk food-addicted humans are desperate to consume you. Where that could have been a throwaway premise, it permates the game and injects humour and personality into it. It’s a can’t miss 80 Microsoft Point purchase, IMO.

Here’s what the developer (Super Boise 2) has to say about the game:

“A new additive called extract-11 has made food irresistible and mutated people into overweight raging hordes! All of the junk food across the nation is quickly consumed until only 4 pieces remain… Play as one of these 4 survivors armed with machine guns, flamethrowers, rocket launchers and more as they use overwhelming firepower to escape the grocery store in this epic twin stick shooter!”

  1. I like the combination of fog and progression. I’ll go and download the trial once the new dashboard sorts itself out.
