We’ve all seen them, and some of us have probably also read them: video games that have been turned into books. Halo, Gears of War, and Mass Effect are well-known ones, but the practice has been going on a long time
Last-gen we saw Crimson Skies and Brute Force get the treatment, and looking further back there was a series of books based on Myst. Before that, many classic Infocom text adventures were turned into novels. Somewhere in there, a series of Wing Commander novels also hit store shelves
While Halo’s rich backstory, and the huge universe of Mass Effect practically scream out for an “expanded universe” of books and other products that explore the games, the popular Gears of War books show that a game that’s thin on backstory can be turned into some pretty incredible books.
So, what indie games do you think would make for great reading as a novel, short story collection, or other kind of book? Answer the poll, or sound off in the comments.
Flotilla. It doesn’t exactly have a rich backstory, but the setting is quite colourful. Besides, tales of a fleet of space pirates having humorous encounters could work.
Hypno has potential for an interesting story or two as well.
I voted for Clover and believe it’s a great story in itself so a book/short story would just add to the story line that already exists. If I could have chose a second it would have been Bloody Checkers since that story unfolds as it is told while playing.
You can vote for multiple games in the survey, actually, sorry I neglected to point that out. You can always vote again by using a different browser.
I included a few no-brainer story-based choices, and a “just so crazy it might work” option in I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1. :)
Well this is easy. Doom and Destiny, and shame on you for not having it on the list. Instead we get the haha game I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1 ……..really ? it just make this list stupid, I hope you got a paper cut or something shortly after creating this list.
Is that really necessary?
As I mentioned in an earlier comment, it was a collection of serious options (Clover, Light’s End, etc.), and the “just so crazy it might work” option in Z0MB1ES!!!1. And I left the ability to write in your own option. The options were just some off the top of my head, far from a holistic list. The whole point is to get some ideas from other people. Thank you for suggesting Doom and Destiny.
Here are the suggested games so far in the poll (some good suggestions here):
that Elite-like game
Bureau Agent Kendall
All the Bad Parts
Dysnomia
Doom and Destiny
fall of gods
My “Other” votes are:
Dark Delve
Minor Dig Deep
CarneyVale Showtime
Wizorb
Apple Jack
I think Ancients of Ooga would make a great book, especially with all the humorous sayings the characters have. Of course the Dreamland Chronicles would make an excellant comic book. The art there is absolutely amazing.
