Day 591: Block Zombies!

Posted: 2012/06/22 in Indie Games

What’s cool about “Block Zombies!”? What makes it differently from other zombie dual-stick shooters out there?

Well, for one the levels are large. For another, the graphical aesthetic is definitely not “me too” (Voxel-based graphics that look more like 3D Dot Heroes than it does “I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1”). The game rewards you with copious upgrades to weapons and equipment, and some of them are innovative (like one that makes the zombies collect together trying to eat a tasty treat you threw them, making them vulnerable to grenades and shotgun volleys).

It’s nice that the game has checkpoints, missions, and a bit of structure to it, which differentiates it from games that are strict gore/shooting fests. For 80 Microsoft Points, it’s definitely worth snagging. As an aside, I swapped out the minimalist description on the Dashboard that would normally end the review with one written by the autor for the Youtube trailer, as I found the latter far more detailed and interesting.

Here’s what the developer (Nostatic Software) has to say about the game:

“In a world gone wrong, one girl stands alone. Alone, but not unarmed!

Strange crystalline structures have turned the populace into mindless, zombie-like creatures.

Explore a variety of environments and upgrade your arsenal as you take on the zombies and blow them into their constituent blocky bits.

Fight the Zombies! Stop the Infection! Save the Day!

Block Zombies is now available on Xbox LIVE Indie Games.”

Nice…I’m not a Voxel kind of gamer and have skipped over many games with this style. However, this one is a plus for me. The video gives it more of a Lego look then just old school squares. Gonna give this on a try and will report back with my feelings. FYI…love twin stick shooters so I have a feeling this one will be a keeper.
