What I like about “Super Ninja Warrior Extreme” is this: it’s a hardcore platformer with frequent deaths and ample lives, but it also has a combat element; it’s not just your platforming skills vs. the deadly enemies and even deadlier obstacles, you can also fight your way through. That’s neat, and not something you see in “Super Meat Boy”, “Aban Hawkins & the 1000 SPIKES” or the “PLATFORMANCE” games.
That fundamental difference changed the feel of the game a lot for me, taking away the sense of being a helpless victim of circumstance and replacing it with the impression of forging your own destiny. It also made the game a little less ridiculously hard, a negative for those who relish in games offering ultimate difficulty, but a boon for the rest of us. I suppose some would argue that makes it more like a traditional combat-oriented platformer, but for me it still felt a bit like the other platformers I mentioned; perhaps it was something about the controls (which are superb), or the type of obstacles you face (spikes, spinning blades, etc.). As you wall jump and katana slash your way through the game, I think you’ll find that it was worth your 80 Microsoft Points.
Here’s what the developer (Ho-Hum Games) has to say about the game:
“Summon your power and put your strength on the test in this, ninja game!”
