One of the things I love about Xbox Live Indie Games is when a developer takes a long moribund genre, something that no big publisher would ever release a new rendition of as a $60 retail title, or even an XBLA title, and does a good job of it.
“Retro Pixel Racers” is just such a release. It has 14 tracks, trophies to earn, tracks to unlock, controls that felt just right to me, tracks that have extremely tight turns that force you to actually use the accelerator with skill (rather than just holding down the gas), and more. For fans of Super Sprint and the many games it’s inspired over the decades, this is a very easy 80 Microsoft Point recommendation.
Here’s what the developer (Josep Monzonis) has to say about the game:
“Retro Pixel Racers is a fun top-down racing game where you control of little cars racing over exciting tracks. Race in 14 different tracks to earn all the trophies. Start your engines and prepare for the craziest and most addictive racing game ever. Retro Pixel Racers is the fastest, most fun top down racer, loads of levels to race. Collect stars to unlock tracks and complete the game.”
What did you think about the collision detection and response? The car vs car collisions were very frustrating to me in this one. I expected more like Super Sprint, but what I got was me stopping and the AI driving over me. :( It’s been a while since I Peer Reviewed this one, maybe things have changed?
