Day 956: Exploding Imp

Posted: 2013/06/23 in Indie Games

I’m not sure how much this game is inspired by “‘Splosion Man”, or “Ms. ‘Splosion Man” for that matter. I own at least, possibly both, of those XBLA titles but have yet to get around to trying them (something about focusing on 956 indie games over the last 956 days). “Exploding Imp” may play similarly, or utterly different, from the ‘Splosion Man games. Either way, it’s pretty cool.

This is one platformer that has excellent level design. They’re challenging, and there are opportunities to turn environmental threats to your own benefit. When you’re attacking enemies the old fashioned way, you’ll either claw them to death in hand-to-hand combat, or exploding gas in their general vicinity. Exploding gas can also be used to super-jump across the map.

Interestingly, the game’s form of health for the protagonist comes from eating bones of defeated enemies. Need more gas? Then convert that health into gas, which is definitely an interesting trade-off.

“Exploding Imp” has a large number of levels, and offers a lot of value for its 80 Microsoft Points. There was a lot I liked about it, and worth a download.

Here’s what the developer (Wytchlight) has to say about the game:

“Help Guff the exploding imp destroy all the magic flowers in the fairy gardens and bring them hell! A chaotic platformer of mischievous fun. Bring destruction and carnage as you explode, hover and jump your way around multiple levels of mayhem.”

Nothing like “‘Splosion Man”, or “Ms. ‘Splosion Man”
