There are more than a few zombie games on Xbox Live Indie Games (XBLIG), but I’ve only elected to review a few. I’m pleased to add “Zombie Square 2” to that list. What elevates it to review status when so few others make the cut? I’m glad you asked, I’ll be happy to tell you.
The standout feature, as I see it, is the way the game is split between the attack phase, and the store phase. In the attack phase, you’re trying to survive the night and protect a town from relentless zombie onslaught. If you survive the night, the city you’ve saved rewards you with a bounty of things you can use to enhance your ability to save the city the following night. Capitalism being what it is, however, these shops will still require you to pay for these upgrades, so you’ll want to earn as much money as you can during the nighttime.
But what a bounty of purchases you have available! In addition to the expected weapons upgrades, you can also buy fixed turrets that you can deploy, and they’re pretty awesome. On top of that, you can purchase vehicles and whip around town mowing down zombies. The game supports local co-op for up to 4 players, and the vehicles particularly come into their own in multiplayer. “Zombie Square 2” is easily worth an 80 Microsoft Point download.
Here’s what the developer (TheJKer) has to say about the game:
“Defend the town from endless hordes of zombies with up to 4 of your friends. Purchase weapons, utilize vehicles and survive for as long as you can.”
