For many people, Japanese side-scrolling 2D shooters like Gradius and R-Type were the definitive “shmups” in the ’80s and ’90s. For many people (chiefly, but not exclusively in Europe), Amiga shooters like Project X are remembered as the gold standard. “Nostalgya”, as its name suggests, is nostalgic trip through memory lane. It looks good, with level design, a colour palette, and sprite design that’s significantly reminiscent of the good ‘ol days of Amiga gaming. And that’s all I wanted out of it. The fact that you can choose from one of six pilots, each imparting different abilities to the ship, is a nice bonus.
Here’s what the publisher (OneGuyGames.com) has to say about the game:
“Travel through four levels of constant action in this space shooter, an homage to the 2D shoot-’em-ups from the 80’s. Choose one from SIX different pilots, each with its own profile and collect up to EIGHT different weapons, including missiles, defense shields and the ultimate weapon – the pulverizer. Play solo or with a friend: you will have a blast in this sci-fi adventure from the past!”
