This game hits all the right notes for me. It takes a classic game and innovates on it, while keeping the retro presentation but upgrading it. “Titan Attacks” has excellent presentation throughout, and turns “Space Invaders” gameplay on its head.
For those not in the know, Space Invaders was so popular when initially released in Japan that there was a national shortage of the specific denomination of coin that it took. But how do you take it into the next century? In this case, it’s via enemies that change their attack patterns, enemies with heavier attacks, and boss enemies. These are doled out as you progress, keeping things fresh. You return the favour by upgrading your ship’s weapons and abilities between waves (make sure to grab money helpfully dropped by enemies). It’s fresh enough, and attractive enough, to be worth a dollar.
Here’s what the publisher (PumpkinGames) has to say about the game:
“As the last surviving tank commander on Earth, single-handedly turn back the evil invading alien army, drive back the Titans across the Solar System, and defeat them on their homeworld…”
